New Musical in the Works!

Posted By on March 26, 2012

Well, Roger and I are at it again. After a couple of less-than-successful attempts to write another novel, we decided to finish a musical called Venice that we started back in the Dark Ages or so. In that version — which was horrible, BTW — we had a script, as well as lyrics for most of the songs, but we had written very little of the music for it — and what we did have wasn’t written down. Considering Venice is a musical, I figured the music was sort of important. :) So last fall I decided I wanted to write music for the lyrics that didn’t have any, and transcribe the music for those that did, just so I could say I finished the damn play. Then when the tantalizing possibility of getting the play produced presented itself, I decided to rewrite the whole thing, book, lyrics, and music. So I threw out the old script and started over. This involved writing several new songs that were never in the original, as well as tossing out some of the old ones. I finished the first draft of the script a week or so ago, and last night I completed the final song. Much revising left to do, but at least I have a full script to work with now.

And Roger? He wrote music for a couple of the songs, but now his real work begins: the unenviable task of writing orchestral arrangements for all of the songs. I can write songs and — maybe — handle very simple orchestral arrangements, but for anything complicated, fuggedaboudit. That’s where Roger’s expertise comes in. He’s a very talented performing musician and very knowledgable about music theory.

As a teaser, here are the song titles, in the order they appear in the play:

Minding Our Own Business
Images of Home
I’m Napoleon
Imagined Boy
Living in the Streets
Moving
Captain of the Guard
Your Eyes
Child of Woe
Just Enough Hate
Love Is Fine
Let the Storm Flow Around Us
Living in the Clouds
Revere’s Lament
Masks of Venice (You Cannot Hide)
The Stone Boat
Across the Water
In the Flesh

My Antiquarian Book Collection

Posted By on September 14, 2011

Hi, Dave here:

For those of you who are interested in antiquarian books, here’s a list of my collection of books printed between 1556-1899 as it now stands. My collection was once more glorious than it is now, with at least one book from every year since 1577, and about 35 nonconsecutive years older than that, including my pride and joy, a book printed in 1474 — only 19 years after printing was invented. Sadly, I had to sell off the best of my collection, but what’s left still isn’t too bad: at least one book from every year since 1690, and a few older than that. They’re listed here in chronological order according to year of publication, but I also keep lists in alphabetical order by author and title. I have another bajillion or so printed in the 20th century, not counting paperbacks, of which I have about a bajillion more.

The format is date of publication, author’s last name, book title. An asterisk after the date indicates that no author was given in the book. Multi-volume sets are listed together on the same line unless the individual volumes were printed in different years, or if the set is incomplete, with nonconsecutive volumes.

Enjoy!

Publications

Posted By on August 23, 2011

Hi, Dave here. A colleague recently asked if there was a place he could go to see a list of all my publications. There wasn’t then, but there is now. I went one step further and listed all the prose I’ve written, published or otherwise.

One thing you’ll notice is that I’m not very prolific. I consider myself primarily a short story writer, but I don’t write often. I’ve finished a total of 60 stories in my life. That’s just over one a year. Some people average more than one short story a day — over 365 a year. In my defense, though, I am a chronic reviser. The first draft is the easy part. After that I revise and revise and revise and … well, you get the idea … until every word is as right as I can make it. So even if I’m not creating something new every day, I’m still writing. I also compose music, which takes away a lot of time that might be spent writing fiction.

Finally, I’ve dabbled in screenplays and musicals, and have attempted six novels. (However, only one of those is complete in itself. One of the six is the first of a two-book set, the second of which was never finished, and two others are part of a trilogy, of which I never finished the third book.) Although the novels I’ve written pad my total number of pages, keep in mind that I’ve been attempting to publish my work since my sophomore year of high school, which as of this writing was 39 years ago. Not a lot of output for 39 years!

INDIVIDUAL SHORT STORIES

1. The Second Coming of John Brown, 1972, 10 pages, unpublished
2. Necrophobia, 1973, 5, published only in a high school literature magazine
3. It Is Written, 1974, 10, unpublished
4. I Am the Last, 1974, 10, unpublished

POETRY

1. Pet, 1985, 1, American Anthology of Poetry

Fortunately, I have lost most of the, ahem, “poetry” I’ve written. I have only published one poem. Happily for the world, I don’t write much poetry. I do write song lyrics, but I don’t consider lyrics to be poetry, even if they rhyme. I’ve addressed my music elsewhere in this blog.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Posted By on November 29, 2010

Roger and I have two book signings/readings coming up early this year. We’ll be at University Book and Supply on Monday, January 24, from 6:00-7:00 p.m., and at the Hearst Center in Cedar Falls on Thursday, February 24, starting at 8:00 p.m. If you have a copy of Hammon Falls you’d like us to sign, come on down. If you don’t, there will be copies available for purchase at both venues.

We may also have copies of our latest book, a short story collection called Voices of Arra, which we hope will be released in January in time for our first reading.

RCBR Reviews Hammon Falls

Posted By on October 7, 2010

Love, loss, tragedy, betrayal, the horrors of war and much more you will find in Hammon Falls, an epic American saga spanning over 115 years from the 1890’s to the present day.  Roger Hileman wrote a screenplay based on his ancestors, Lester Hileman and Cora Felton and the birth of their child. Roger, together with long time friend, Dave Hoing, has turned the play into an impressive and memorable work of historical fiction.

We meet Margaret Hammon, widowed when her husband, G.W. Hammon, was killed in the Spanish-American war in 1898. G.W. was the most prominent citizen in Johnson’s Landing, a small Iowa town renamed Hammon Falls in his honor after the war. Margaret, now a wealthy recluse, raises their only child George alone. As a teenager in 1914, George had everything he could want except for a father and his mother’s affection. He takes a job below his social status as a laborer at a stable.

Cora Curtis is the only daughter of widower Orville “Luka” Curtis, a boxer, beer distributor, and gangster in the making. Luka, an established playboy, had his eye on Margaret’s money and property. But, the aloof and religious Margaret had no time for the vulgar Orville. It was only a matter of time before the offspring of the area’s two richest families would get together. The blossoming teen romance of George and Cora would end abruptly with a tragic birth and George running away to war torn Europe.

William Hammon would grow up with nothing more from his father than a battlefield photograph from 1915, taken at the height of the Great War in Belgium. George would stay in Europe for two decades after WWI, through the Spanish Flu pandemic, heartbreak and a battle with alcohol in the slums of Paris and Ireland.

The story unfolds out of sequence with chapters named after the main character, with the setting and year named such as Will, Waterton Iowa, 2009, or George Ypres Belgium 1915. Many storylines such as George’s short time with Cora, Luka’s rise in organized crime, and William as a teen, are explored to completion for a wonderful ending that leaves no loose ends. Plenty of conflict, surprises, and drama exist to keep the pages turning and I finished the book much sooner than expected.

Readers who haven’t previously been fans of historical fiction will be after reading this book.  Those who enjoy this genre are in for a treat as Hammon Falls delivers with an intriguing story, interesting and believable characters, and dialogue authentic to the mid-west. The authors have thoroughly researched the settings and represented time periods. The character development is amazing throughout and I could fully imagine even secondary characters. The prose has a lyrical quality that is a joy to read. At the end I found myself not ready to let this story go—wishing I could continue to immerse myself in just a few more pages.

Hammon Falls receives the highest recommendation from William Potter for Reader’s Choice Book Reviews.
